Dirty Dancing is powered by Playtech and has 5 reels and 40 paylines. Playable on all devices from 40p to £1,000 per spin, this progressive jackpot game is based on the iconic film (of the same name) which starred Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze. The movie was a worldwide hit and its soundtrack generated 2 multi-platinum albums!
Looks wise, it’s rather pink and depicts the film perfectly – symbols on the reels include regular playing cards (A, K, Q, J and 10) which are in glitter, a radio, a red car with dancing shoes and characters from the actual film. You will see Baby (Jennifer Grey) and Penny (Cynthia Rhodes) but Johnny (Patrick Swayze) is the wild symbol – he is also the highest value symbol with 125 times your stake for 5 on a payline.
When it comes to features, there’s plenty – they are all triggered randomly in the base game. First up is the Mambo Free Games feature – you get to spin the bonus wheel to win mambo modifiers including extra free spins (3, 4 or 5), a 2x multiplier for all wins and dancing wilds on every free spin. You only stop spinning the wheel when you land on collect which will give you an extra 2 free spins.
Dancing Wilds are important – it’s stacked on all reels and appears as 1 long image that occupies 4 positions on the reel. The good news is that the Dancing Wild symbol remains on the reels for every free spin and changes position (randomly) on each free spin. Basically, you have stacked wilds on every free spin!
Then there’s the Dirty Dancing Bonus feature where you can win cash prizes and fall in love with Johnny and Baby all over again! It’s a simple pick me style game where you help Baby pick boxes to reveal cash prizes and items – if you collect 3 items, you will advance to the next round of the feature. If you finish all 6 stages, you will activate the Time of My Life Jackpot game.
Here, you will win 1 of 2 progressive jackpots – you need to open boxes to reveal Johnny or Baby symbols. When you match 3 symbols of a kind, you will win the corresponding jackpot. The bigger jackpot is the Johnny Jackpot by the way!
Finally, there’s a Whirling Wilds feature where, during any spin in the base game, Johnny and Baby can dance across the reels. In the process, they will add between 2 and 6 random wilds in any position. This can lead to big wins if they land across a payline.
I was expecting the game to be a bit more upbeat. However, it maintains the 1960s theme. You do see footage from the actual film but it’s in the bonus features. I really like the Mambo Free Games feature due to the potential of the Dancing Wilds – this is where the real big wins will come from.
The Whirling Wilds feature is also pretty decent and can provide some decent wins when you least expect it. Overall, Dirty Dancing is a medium to high variance game in my opinion so can be quite frustrating to win big in the features – most of time it will be small amounts. It’s not the best branded/movie slot that Playtech has created but a welcome addition to their huge range of games – I recommend you also try Ace Ventura Pet Detective or Top Gun.
