Looking more like a social media game than a slot, Crystal Land is a 7 reel, cluster pays game from Playson. Played using a cascading reels game engine, it comes with plenty of extras including wilds, bombs which clear reels and rows, substituted symbols and multipliers which can boost payouts by up to 9x. Play from between 20p and £100 per spin.

The design in Crystal Land is a nicely done – set against an idyllic looking rural backdrop, the reels are made up of a grid of 6 brightly coloured gemstone symbols. Winning combinations are created by landing 5 or more of the same gemstone in vertical or horizontal cluster. After a winner, the symbols are blasted away and a new drop takes place.

You’ll notice that some of the symbol positions higher up the reels are blocked. These open up with each successive symbol drop win. The goal is to try and clear the top reel which triggers the Bonus feature. There are some extra goodies on offer to try and help you manage that – random wilds can be added with ruby wilds joining the mix once you’ve cleared row 5.

You’ll see a progress meter to the left of the reels – fill this by landing a win that features a wild, a ruby wild and a potion bottle. You’ll then get a level up which can award a gathered cash amount, double the gathered cash amount or carry the gathered cash amount through to the next level.

Ruby wilds are awarded by landing a 6-symbol combination. Look out too for the bombs which destroy 2 adjacent symbols. When a ruby wild forms part of a winner it turns into a bomb.

Once you have opened up the top row, you’ll trigger the Bonus feature – try and clear the reels (which don’t have symbols drops in the feature) with transforming potion bottles and bombs. If you manage to reveal the treasure chests below the reels, you’ll collect stars which in turn award multiplier prizes. If you manage to get all the stars, you’ll be in line for a 9x multiplier boost.

There’s certainly plenty going on in Crystal Land and it looks a little complex on first view. You’ll soon pick up what’s what though. The symbol drops deliver a steady stream of lower value wins. The best opportunities come via the Bonus feature – land a good win from that run of drops then uncover all the multipliers and some hefty awards are possible.

Crystal Land is very different from your common or garden fruit machine. It works well though combining quality sound and visuals with some enjoyable gameplay. Unusual it certainly is but Crystal Land is well worth a closer look. If you want prefer more conventional slots, Playson has plenty with Alice in Wonderslots and Viking Gods: Thor and Loki worth looking into.
