Looking more like a social game than a traditional slot, Crystal Crush is an unusual game from Playson. The action takes place on a hexagonal grid with winning combinations created by landing clusters of 5 or more matching symbols next to each other. Fill meters to trigger 6 levels of bonuses which award multipliers and wild transformations. Play this colourful game on all devices from between 25p and £100 per spin.

The set up here is pretty unusual. There are no reels or paylines as such. Instead you’ll find 61 different symbol positions set within a 6-sided shape. Land 5 or matching symbols in combination to create a winner. Those winning symbols are then removed and new ones drop in and replace them. These continue as long as a new winning combination is created.

The best payer is the orange symbol which pays 6.4 times your stake if you land a cluster of 9 or more matching symbols. There’s also a wild that replaces everything.

Look out too for crystallized symbols. These don’t come with any pays or form part of winning combinations. What they do is fill up positions on their associated progress bar. Crystallized symbols are crushed and become paying symbols if they’re next to a standard winning combination.

Every third crushed crystal symbol awards a new bonus level – this is known as the Crystal Crush feature. There are 6 of these bonus levels to work through:

  • Bonus Level 1 – wins featuring this colour symbol receive a 2x multiplier boost
  • Bonus Level 2 – up to 3 random symbols of the same colour turn into wilds
  • Bonus Level 3 – wins featuring this colour symbol receive a 3x multiplier boost
  • Bonus Level 4 – up to 6 random symbols of the same colour become wild
  • Bonus Level 5 – wins featuring this colour symbol receive a 4x multiplier boost
  • Bonus Level 6 – all standard and crystal symbols of the same colour turn wild

The bonus resets back to normal if there’s a spin where no new winning combination is created. You could also trigger the Crystal Crush feature at random followed any winless spin. You’ll then be awarded 2 Bonus Levels.

If you’re a fan of classic fruit machines, then Crystal Crush probably won’t be for you. This has more in common with Facebook games than classic slots. If that’s what you like, then what you’ll find here is perfectly fine. The colourful design is simple but good enough and the repetitive gameplay works well.

The variance here is in the medium to high range with top payouts of 409 times your stake on each spin, it’s not something we’ll be rushing to play that often. I would rather play other Playson titles like Wild Warriors and Legend of Loki.
