Play’n GO can produce some inventive slots, yet the theme of this one is very predictable. As the name of the game suggests, Scales of Dead is a ‘Book of…’ slot that follows on from the original Book of Dead.

The reels hang against the Great Sand Sea dunes of ancient Egypt. It’s a little vague for our liking, especially since the last instalment, Pilgrim of Dead, had such a specific setting and storyline. Low paying symbols include 10 to Ace royals, and more valuable symbols include Anubis, Horus, and Ankhs. the cobra is the highest paying regular symbol, rewarding you with 500 x your stake for a 5 of a kind combination.

The symbol to look out for is the Golden Tomb, which acts as both a wild and a scatter. It substitutes for all regular symbols and 3 or more scatters triggers the Free Spins round. Additionally, it also pays out up to 100 x your bet.

You need to land 3 or more scatters in the base game to trigger the Free Spins feature. You begin the round with 8 free spins and 1 regular symbol is chosen at random to become a special expanding symbol.

When enough of the respective symbol land, they expand to fill the entire reel. These symbols do not need to appear adjacent to each other to result in extra wins.

Sandstorm Free Spins Feature

As we just explained, to enter the Sandstorm Free Spins round, you need to first enter the regular free spins round and then land 2 additional scatter symbols.

You begin the Sandstorm Free Spins feature with 4 spins. The spins then play out in the same way as the regular game, with one major difference. Now, a multiplier of 2, 3 or 4x is applied to each expanding symbol. The multiplier value is selected at random.

You can retrigger the Sandstorm Free Spins feature by landing 2 extra scatters. You receive 2 extra spins for each retrigger, up to a maximum of 30 spins.

Gamble Feature

Outside of the UK, Scales of Dead also features an optional gamble round after every spin. This gives you an opportunity to multiply the total prize on any spin in the base game.

It’s a simple card game, where you must either guess the colour of the card (1 in 2 chance) or the suit (1 in 4 chance). Guess the colour of the card correctly and you’ll double your winnings. Guess the suit and you’ll quadruple them.

You can use the gamble feature up to 5 times in a row, and the feature doesn’t impact the overall RTP of the game.

Scales of Dead Slot Review Summary: rewarding but a little dull

The Scales of Dead slot looks a bit boring compared to some of Play’n GO’s other ‘Book of…’ releases. Whilst the pyramids in the background look great, we do miss exploring the dark tombs found in the likes of Legacy of Dead and Pilgrim of Dead.

In terms of gameplay, it’s all about the Sandstorm Free Spins feature. If you manage to make it there, the key to winning big is the expanding symbols with multipliers. This gives you your best shot a reaching those 5,000 x bet max wins, though it’s a little disappointing that the symbols and multipliers are chosen at random.

Overall, Scales of Dead is a decent instalment to the series, but nothing we’re overly excited about. In contrast to other ‘Book of…’ slots, we’re not sure that Play’n GO has put enough of a twist on the mechanics to make it something really special.
