The Hugo slot is a 5 reel, 10 payline game which is powered by Play ‘n GO. Playable from 10p to £100 a spin across desktop, mobile, tablet devices, the game is based on a friendly little Scandinavian troll that has appeared on television, magazines, video games and various other platforms – there is also an animated feature film being produced.

The aim of Hugo is the unearth the world’s most valuable treasure and rescue Hugo’s wife Hugoline from the clutches of evil. Appearance wise, it has a cartoon feel and has a total of 13 different symbols. There are 5 low paying playing card symbols (A, K, Q, J and 10), 4 high paying symbols (digging picks, dynamite sticks, bags of gold and golden nuggets) as well as Hugo and the Evil Witch Afskylia.

Hugo is the wild symbol and substitutes for any other symbol (except the scatter/bonus) to help you with winning combinations. It will also double your outcome if part of a winning combo.

When it comes to features, there’s the Treasure Bonus feature which is played when you get the treasure chest scatter symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5. You get to choose doors inside the gold mine with the aim to reach the treasure chamber unnoticed and find the greatest treasure of all.

Each door rewards you with cash prizes with the big lump of treasure giving you a huge win up to 150 times your stake. You need to be wary of Don Croco, the Crocodile Henchman, who can lurk behind any door and end the feature.

There is also a Free Spins feature which is played when 3 or more Evil Witch Afskylia scatter symbols appear anywhere on the reels – the good thing is that an additional extra scatter symbol, Hugoline, can show up stacked on all reels. Once in, you have 3 options:

  • 5 free spins where each extra scatter pays 3 times your total stake when it appears
  • 10 free spins where each extra scatter pays 2 times your total stake when it appears
  • 15 free spins where each extra scatter pays 1 time your total stake when it appears

Now, if you find 3 or more Evil Witch Afskylia scatters during the feature, you will trigger the Free Spins feature – you will get the same number of free spins as you chose the first time. More importantly, if the wild symbol is part of a winning combination, it would subject your wins to a 2x multiplier.

Hugo may seem like a standard slot game but there are wins of up to 10,000 times your stake to be won – it’s a medium variance title with the bigger wins coming in the Free Spins feature naturally. I would go for the 5 free spins as a cash prize of 3 times your stake for every extra scatter can soon mount up – I’ve had a few free spins with 3 and 4 stacked extra scatters which resulted in an overall win of just over 1,500 times my stake. I also recommend you try Grim Muerto, by Play ‘N Go, which also has a superb win potential.
