Gunpowder uses a 5-reel, 3 row, 10 payline game engine. Land 3, 4 or 5 matching symbols or wilds from left to right in a payline, starting from reel 1 for a winning combination.

You can set sail here at bet levels of between 10p and £50 per spin. Click on the bet box to adjust your bet size. If legal in your territory, the autoplay function lets you set between 10 and 100 autospins. There’s also a turbo spin mode. Neither of these options are on offer to UK players.

The Gunpowder RTP is 96.23% which is slightly better than average. The game has a hit rate of 18.83% which means, on average, a winning combination lands every 5.3 spins. As you might have guessed from that relatively low hit rate, the Gunpowder volatility is high (4/5).

The maximum win is an impressive 10,000 x stake.

Theme: battleships take to the sea

An aerial view of a tropical harbour is the setting for gunpowder. In the background you’ll see cannons, wooden dinghies, a wooden ship in a dry dock and palm trees. The reels are made up of wooden A-10 royal ranks alongside five more rewarding pirate ship symbols. By pirates, I mean ships that Bluebeard and Captain Morgan might have sailed in rather than the modern day equivalent terrorising tankers in the Red Sea.

The best ship is the orange one with a battery of guns. Land 5 of these in a line for an award equal to 20 x stake.

The Ghost Ship is wild. This triggers a feature when it lands. I’ll look at this in detail in the bonuses section below.

There’s a 3D, cartoon-style look to the visuals here. The monochrome symbols are quite small, even when playing on a desktop device. Against the turquoise seas in the background, it’s not always the sharpest.

I liked the stirring soundtrack though which is a perfect fit for this naval adventure.

Gunpowder mobile

The simple gameplay in Gunpowder is well-suited to mobile play. The visuals have the look of a social media-style game. Like the desktop version, it’s not the flashiest game you’ll see in terms of design but it’s functional enough to make the game very playable. All Peter & Sons slots play well on smaller screens to be honest.

Gunpowder Bonus Features

There’s plenty of heavy artillery on offer when it comes to the features on offer in Gunpowder. Sticky wilds can award re-spins and spread to adjoining symbols. There’s also a classic free spins bonus.

Free Spins Feature

Land 3, 4 or 5 scatters on the same spin and you’ll trigger the bonus round and with it 10, 12 or 15 free spins. Each wild that lands during the free spins is sticky and locks in place for the remaining spins. If you manage to land a wild on all 5 reels during the free spins, another 5 free spins are added to your total.

Phantom Power

Any wild that lands can randomly trigger the Phantom Power feature. The wild then goes into battle with any high value ship symbols that surround it. If the wild wins the battle in the base game, it turns the defeated ship’s position wild, and a re-spin follows. If the wild ship wins in the free spins, there’s no re-spin. Instead, a 2x or 3x multiplier is added to the wild that replaces the defeated vessel.

Golden bet & Feature Buy

In some jurisdictions, you can increase your bet size by 0.5x stake and activate the Golden Bet. This boosts your chances of landing Sticky Wilds in the base game or a trigger of the free spins.

There’s also a feature buy facility. For a fee of 170 x stake you’ll get a random trigger of 10, 12 or 15 free spins.

While you won’t see anything new and innovative here, Peter & Sons has done just enough to make it appealing for anyone who enjoys a pirate-themed slot.

I found the base game action in Gunpowder a little on the slow side. The free spins round was the exact opposite though. An early haul of wilds and battle victories meant that the Phantom Power multipliers really did their stuff. These seas are very rough though and at other times, my bankroll sank without trace.

I wasn’t bowled over by the design in Gunpowder. The visuals were fine without really standing out. The catchy soundtrack is a good one though.

There are already huge numbers of pirate-themed slots to choose from. Gunpowder offers something a bit different from most of them. For that reason alone, it’s worth setting sail on this volatile seafaring yarn.
