Bonus Features in The Thunderer

Pariplay has kept things relatively simple as far as The Thunderer bonus features are concerned. Look out for expanding reels which can also award special bonus prizes. Trigger the prize wheel and you’ll spin to win free games or possibly a jackpot prize.

Expanding Reel feature

The Thunderer slot - Expanding Reel feature

The base game action takes place on a standard 5 reel, 3 row machine which offers 243 ways to win. To create a winning combination, you’ll need to land matching symbols on adjoining reels, starting from reel 1.

Look out for special glowing mystic ball symbols. Fill the whole of reel 1 with these and you’ll trigger the Expanding Reel feature.

In the base game, the game engine can expand to add 1, 2 or 3 extra rows. Trigger this during the free spins and you could see up to 5 extras rows added.

A standard payout calculation isn’t made here. Instead, you’ll be paid the value shown on any other mystic ball symbols on view on adjoining reels on that spin. Each ball can pay up to 20x your bet or even award a jackpot prize.

Land 1 or 2 mystic balls on reel 1 and you’ll receive nudges which trigger the Expanding Reel Feature. You can expect to trigger this extra more often in the free spins round than in the base game.

Wheel feature

The Thunderer slot - Wheel feature

To be in with a chance of landing the Wheel feature, you’ll need to land the scatter symbol on reels 3, 4 and 5 on the same spin. You’ll then get a spin of the bonus wheel. Depending on where the pointer lands, you’ll be awarded the following:

  • 5, 7, 8, 10, 15 or 20 free spins
  • 1 of 4 jackpots

The jackpots are worth:

  • Mini Jackpot of 50 x your stake
  • Minor Jackpot of 100 x your stake
  • Major Jackpot of 250 x your stake
  • Mega Jackpot of 1,000 x your stake

You can also land the jackpot prizes via the Expanding Reels feature. There are no scatters in playing during the free spins round so retriggers aren’t available.

The Thunderer Spirit Slot RTP, Details and Wager Limits

The set up in The Thunderer is a common one. The base machine offers 5 reels and 3 rows but the mystic balls can of course change that. You can set the autoplay to between 10 and 100 spins. You can also apply win and loss limits as well as end autoplay on any win or when you trigger the feature.

If you want to speed up the gameplay you can opt for quick or turbo mode. Click on the arrow tab above the spin button to the right of the screen to set all this up.

Playable from 20p to £40 per spin, it’s a medium to high variance slot – with a hit frequency of 30.81%, the most you can win is 1,000 x your stake from the Mega Jackpot. What is impressive here is the RTP of 97%. That’s much higher than you’ll find in many slots and certainly on the generous side.

The symbols stand out clearly against the plain blue reels, even on a small screen device. The expanding wilds don’t feel too squashed either. In fact, The Thunderer works rather well on a mobile or tablet.

The Thunderer Spirit Theme - Audio and Design features - super visuals & sweeping soundtrack

The Thunderer slot - base game

The sound and visuals in The Thunderer slot are impressively done. You’ll see blue skies, flowing waterfalls, marble buildings and Mount Olympus in the background. On the reels you’ll find gemstone-style playing card suit symbols as well as 4 higher paying symbols that are more in keeping with the ancient Greek theme.

They include a Greek man playing a lyre and 2 women in crowns and togas. These 3 character symbols all pay 5 times your stake if you land 5 on adjoining reels. Pegasus is the most rewarding symbol. Land 2, 3, 4 or 5 of the winged horse in combination and you’ll pocket an award of 1, 2, 4 or 10 times your stake.

Pegasus and the character symbols are packed full of detail and very nicely drawn. There’s a comic book feel to the design which is very nicely realised.

As you’d expect given the theme, there’s a sweeping orchestral score playing while you spin, which is punctuated by cracks of lightning. The ambient noises from winning spins had us reaching for the mute button though.

The game interface is simple to use. You can adjust stake levels on the game page. Click on the 3 lines for the settings. There you’ll find the paytable and game rules. We had to read both to get up to speed on the full array of features.

The Thunderer Spirit Review Summary - cracking design, ordinary gameplay

The design in The Thunderer is excellent. Both the sound and visuals are impressively done. I was less wowed by the gameplay here which I found a little on the dull side.

The expanding reels and free spins are fine as they go. And of course, the jackpots are potentially very welcome. I’d have liked to have seen a few more extra modifiers to spice things up a bit. What I did like though was the high RTP rate of 97%.

The Thunderer joins the massed ranks of ancient Greek slots. It’s a playable enough new arrival but doesn’t really stand out in such a packed field. For better slots with the same theme, you cannot go wrong with Age of the Gods by Playtech which offers superb graphics, 4 free spins features, 4 progressive jackpots and big potential payouts.
