Las Cucas Locas, roughly translated into English as The Mad Cockroaches, is a Mexican-themed slot from Pariplay. Featuring the developer’s usual high-end design, it’s a 5 reel, 25 payline game that comes with a pick’em style bonus round. Head south of the Rio Grande on all devices from between 25p and £25 per spin.
Visually, Las Cucas Locas is very impressively put together – the reels are set against a desert backdrop, complete with rocky outcrops and cactuses. Symbols include tacos, sombreros, maracas, cactus plants, red hot chilli peppers, tins of jumping beans and a cockroach dressed up like a Mexican wrestler. The most rewarding symbol is the insect senorita – land 3, 4 or 5 of these on a single payline and you’ll pocket 50, 160 or 1,000 coins.
The gun-toting bandito is the game’s wild – he can land on any reel and replaces all other symbols apart from the bonus and scatter. 2, 3 or 4 of these pay 2, 5 or 10 times your win. 5 in a row awards 5,000 times your bet! The guitar-playing, mariachi musician is the scatter – land 3, 4 or 5 of these anywhere on the reels and you’ll win a payout equal to 3, 6 or 30 times your stake.
The final symbol to look out for is the multi-coloured donkey which is the bonus – land 3, 4 or 5 of these and you’ll trigger the Piñatas Fiestas feature. It’s a pick’em style round where you have to whack the paper donkeys and in the process, earn cash prizes. You can hit up to 6 piñatas in all.
Las Cucas Locas is a bit of a mixed bag – as far as look and sound are concerned, this slot is up there with the best. The bright, vibrant colours are a feast for the eyes. The classic Mexican-themed soundtrack is a cracker too.
A shame then that we found the gameplay a little disappointing. The base game action is steady enough and the Piñatas Fiestas feature offers some decent winning chances. We landed the picks round regularly and had both tiny and very big wins. We’d have just liked to have seen a little more on the features front (i.e. some free spins).
Las Cucas Locas is almost a great slot – we thought it just lacked a little something. It’s very well designed and offers plenty of action and if you enjoy the Mexican theme then certainly give it a look. Our first port of call for a similarly themed slot would be ELK Studios’ Taco Brothers though.
