The set up in King of the Trident is a little unusual. The action takes place on a set of reels that is 3x3x3x6x6 symbols high. They combine to offer 972 ways to create a winning combination. With the ocean floor in the background, you’ll see A to 9 symbols as well as an assortment of aquatic life spinning around the reels.
The best of the standard symbols is Poseidon’s golden trident. Land 3, 4 or 5 of these on adjacent reels for a payout of 1, 1.6 or 4 times your stake. Poseidon, sporting a mighty white beard is the wild. He replaces all the standard symbols. There are a couple of extras to take note of here.
Giant Re-Spin feature – this extra is triggered if you manage to fill reels 1, 2 and 3 with the same matching symbol. Reels 1, 2 and 3 will be populated by colossal 3x3 symbols on the re-spin with reels 4 and 5 spinning as normal. Land a high value colossal symbol in full and the coins can quickly flow here.
Scatter Free Spins feature - land 3, 4 or 5 scatters on the same spin and you’ll receive 8, 12 or 40 free spins. During those free spins, reels 4 and 5 are filled with 2x2 symbols. Land 1 or 2 scatters and 2 or 4 extra free spins are added to your total. You can get up to 20 extra free spins in this way.
The cartoon-style visuals in King of the Trident are simply done but work well enough. The backing track has a grand feel to it – perfect for Poseidon (the king of the sea gods). There’s nothing overly innovative about the gameplay but the colossal symbol re-spins can certainly deliver some decent action. As can the free spins round.
You can win up to 1,746.4 times your stake on each spin/re-spin/free spin which is good. If you like your ancient-themed slots to come with a nautical flavour, then it’s worth diving into the King of the Trident. If you like the theme, you can join Poseidon in Novomatic’s Lord of the Ocean or Play ‘N Go’s Rise of Olympus.
