The action takes place in a farmyard setting – the reels, such as they are, are a 5×5 grid set inside a square of picket fences. You’ll start with 13 of the 25 spaces filled by a variety of crops such as carrots and lettuce as well as a variety of farmyard animals such as chickens, pigs and cows.

Match 3 of the same symbol on adjacent positions and they’ll be harvested and you’ll win a prize – 2 extra plots will then be opened and another ‘spin’ will take place. These keep on going until there’s no winning combination on show or you manage to fill all 25 squares with crops. Manage that and you’ll trigger the bonus feature and be awarded 6 free spins.

During the feature, all 25 plots in the garden grid are in play at all times, boosting your winning opportunities. You can also collect food items while you’re playing – these unlock backgrounds and help you to level up. There are 50 levels in all. They won’t win you any extra cash but they do keep things fresh in terms of visuals and crops to collect.  Those visuals in fact are uniformly excellent – the farmyard is superbly done with the on-screen action playing out to a catchy little backing track. The variance is on the low side of medium though.

If you were enchanted by the Farmville craze on Facebook, you’ll find plenty to enjoy here – Gourmet Ranch Riches takes a little getting used to though If you prefer traditional fruit machines, it may not be your bag.
