Taking down a magical haul of treasure is the goal in Wizard of Odds, a 5 reel, 20 payline slot from Novomatic. This sorcery-themed game comes with a pair of pick’em features as well as a free spins round with multipliers. You’ll also have a shot at winning a bumper progressive jackpot prize. Stakes range from between 20p and £50 per spin.

Magical isn’t usually an adjective used to describe Novomatic powered slots and that’s true of Wizard of Odds – the design is solid enough but it’s hardly a thing of beauty. A mountaintop castle forms the backdrop to the reels. Those reels include A to 9 playing cards alongside a wand and the bearded wizard himself.

The Wizard of Odds logo is the most rewarding symbol. 3, 4 or 5 of these in a line will get you 3.5, 20 or 75 times your total stake. Somewhat unusually for a Novomatic title, there are plenty of features on offer in Wizard of Odds:

Spellbook Bonus feature – land 1 spellbook scatter symbol anywhere on reel 3 to trigger this pick’em style round. The book will open to reveal a prize that can reach up to 22 times your total stake.

Wizard’s Hat Bonus feature – this free spins round is triggered by landing the wizard’s hat symbol on reels 3, 4 and 5 on the same spin. Pick 1 of the hats to reveal the number of free spins awarded – then pick again to see what multiplier will be applied to each of your winning free spin wins.

Cauldron Bonus feature – land the cauldron on reels 1, 3 and 5 to trigger this round. Pick a potion from the shelf. The wizard will add it to the cauldron and then to your payout. Keep on adding until the potion is complete. Prizes of up to 100 times your stake can be won here. If the cauldron explodes though, you’ll win the progressive jackpot prize and a potentially much larger payout.

Despite the potentially explosive potions in the bonus round, this isn’t a particularly volatile slot. The variance is in the low to medium range. The RTP is an underwhelming 93.29%.

The design isn’t special but the gameplay is solid enough without offering anything really innovative. The progressive jackpot is a decent enough carrot though. Combined with the other features, it makes Wizard of Odds worth a quick look but probably nothing more than that. If it’s wizards you’re after, you cannot go wrong with Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers.
