Theme: a sad of old and his telly

A dingy room with walls covered in stains, empty fat shakes and slices of pizza is the setting for Loner. Glamorous this most certainly is not. The reels are set within an old-school, big box-style TV set which is tuned to the shopping channel on the charmingly named C.O.C.K. TV. Classy.

The reels are made up of A to 9 royals (which are done in the style of lettering you might associate with a ransom note). You’ll also see objects for sale from the TV shopping channel including a rubber duck (tagline – Reel Duck Tape), a TV remote control (Order 1 for 2), a slice of pizza (Cardiolicious), a bomb (Banging Deal!) and the Loner himself.

There’s also a wild that substitutes for all the standard symbols as well as a TV monitor that can display a variety of symbols which can trigger a feature.

The soundtrack is rather generic, punctuated by inane TV chatter which bizarrely, fits the theme perfectly.

While not explicitly stated, there’s a real 1980s feel here. The graphics in the features have a blocky, Commodore 64 feel. There’s even a reference to Ronald Reagan.

Monitor Modifiers

The monitor scatter symbol can land on reels 1, 3 and 5. If you land 1 or 2 monitors on the same spin, those symbols transform into one of the following:

• Standard Wild – A standard 1×1 wild.
• xSplit – This splits the symbols directly to the left and right, in effect doubling them and increasing the number of ways to win. The monitor then turns into a single, 1×1 wild too.

Pick the Win

This is a bit like the classic video game Pong. A logo symbol bounces around a screen. If it lands outside a corner, a multiplier of between 1x and 500x is awarded. When the logo does land in a corner, it collects the prize in that corner. These are worth 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, 100,

Tick Tick Boom

This is a simple pick me feature. Choose one of the 3 buildings. This is then blown up and a prize of between 5 and 1,000 x stake is paid out. The max win can hit here too.

Shoot Shoot Duck

This is a classic fairground-style duck shoot. You’ll start with 5 shots. Hit a duck to reveal one of the following prizes:

• Ammo Clip: Increases shots back up to 5.

With a controversial theme, bold design, unusual features and insanely high volatility, Loner ticks all the usual boxes for a slot from Nolimit City.

The Loner of the title appears to have a bit of a miserable life. He’d probably be called an ‘incel’ if you were making a game about a similar type of character from today. The game comes with plenty of extras though and there’s no shortage of action here.

The Monitor modifiers appear fairly regularly but it’s the three main bonus rounds that offer the best winning potential. They can all in fact, deliver the max win of 14,999 x stake. The lack of free spins might be a bit of a deal break for some, but the other bonuses can pack a decent punch. I found the Duck Shoot the pick of this particular bunch.

As usual for a Nolimit slot, Loner won’t be for everyone. It’s not quite as insane as Kenneth Must Die but it will still likely be something of an acquired taste. If you’ve enjoyed the other slots from this developer, Loner is well worth a closer look.
