Witch Pickings is a NextGen Gaming-powered video slot with 5 reels and 25 paylines. Playable from 40p to £80 a spin, this game is available to play on desktop, mobile and tablet devices. It’s based on witches who can reward you with some great prizes and lets you choose the characteristics within the bonus feature.

Graphically, it has a very gentle feel to it which resembles the Wizard of Oz to some extent. It’s colourful, bright, magical and has a superb bonus feature to benefit from. Firstly you have the Witches Bonus feature which is played when 3 or more Witches scatter symbols appear on the reels. You are awarded 5 free spins.

Here you get to choose 3 features for the Free Games feature – you have 1 pick from each section or pot (which each contain 3 individual features). They are as follows:

Pot 1

Symbols the Same – the castle, cauldron, potion bottle or pendant symbol is chosen at random. If the castle is chosen for example, all the other mentioned symbols then become the selected symbol.

Symbols Stacked – the castle, cauldron, potion bottle or pendant symbol is chosen randomly to become stacked.

Symbol Prizes – castle, cauldron, potion bottle or pendant symbol is chosen at random. A prize between 25 and 500 coins is then awarded whenever the chosen symbol appears.

Pot 2

Expanding Wilds – any wild symbols (the purple magic ball with wild on it) expand to fill all 3 positions within that reel.

Extra Wilds – extra wild symbols are simply added to the reels.

Wild Multiplier – a win containing a wild symbol is randomly multiplied by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 10x.

Pot 3

All Wins Multiplier – all wins can be multiplied by 2, 3, 4 or 5 which include symbol prizes.

Pays Both Ways – all wins with this feature pay both left to right and right to left.

Extra 5 Free Games – this gives you an extra 5 free spins to the existing 5 with retriggers available.

As mentioned, you need to choose one from each pot/section – I would personally go for stacked symbols, wild multiplier and an extra 5 free spins. I’ve tried to mix and match these with varying results. My biggest win to date came when I got 4 wilds and chose the Expanding Wilds feature which resulted in a 235 times stake win from 1 free spin!

On top of this, you will see Trophies and History/Top Scores buttons to the right-hand side of the reels. The Trophies page displays which milestones you’ve earned such as how many times you trigger the feature and the size of your feature win.

The History/Top Scores page displays the last 5 feature selections and the top 5 feature selections – this allows you to record your progress in terms of what you’ve chosen so you can pick the same again or try something different. There is also an Autopick button once the feature triggers which randomly chooses 3 features for you.

I really like the Witch Pickings slot game as you can create your own bonus feature to an extent. As mentioned, I would personally choose the expanding wilds or wild multiplier in pot 2 and extra free spins in pot 3. I consider the game to be medium variance as it’s nicely balanced.

NextGen Gaming has produced a lot of slot games over the years but have upped the ante in recent times with some superb releases – such as Cash Stampede. If witches/horror are your thing, you can’t go wrong with either Microgaming’s Immortal Romance or Ash Gaming’s Full Moon Fortunes.
