Take a trip back in time to the days when Rome ruled the world in Call of the Colosseum, a 5 reel, 25 payline video slot from NextGen Gaming. This Roman themed title comes with a classic free spins bonus feature that offers plenty of extra goodies. Play from between 25p and £50 per spin.
Call of the Colosseum celebrates all things Roman and that is clearly evident from the high class images on the reels. They include symbols featuring grapes and coins, money purses and sandals, shields and helmets, chariots and the Colosseum, chained up tigers and a Roman girl. The Roman girl is the top payer of the standard symbols offering payouts of 5,000 times your line bet if you manage to find 5 on a payline.
The quality of the graphics are ok - the images are sharp and clear on a white background and set against the backdrop of the Colosseum. The soundtrack has a distinctly epic feel and certainly adds to the theme. The sound and visuals get a definite thumbs up though as it feels like a proper slot game.
In addition to the standard symbols are the wild and scatter. The Roman emperor is the wild. He only appears on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 and substitutes for all symbols apart from the scatter. That's standard enough in the base game, he has a more important role in the free spins round though.
That Free Games feature is triggered when you hit 3 or more of the round shield symbols anywhere on the reels. In addition to a scatter payout of between 5 and 100 coins, you'll also be awarded with 10 free spins. Look out for the emperor wild during the feature though.
Whenever he appears he'll give either a thumbs up or thumbs down, Gladiator style. If its thumbs down you'll just continue on to the next free spin. Thumbs up however and you'll be awarded between 1 and 3 extra free spins. It's possible to find multiple emperors on single spins and really give your free spins a boost.
I've managed to more than double the number of free spins offered. To top it all, every winning payline hit during the feature is subject to a 2x multiplier and will be doubled.
Call of the Colosseum is a fairly simple offering. It's not particularly flashy in either the visuals or features department. What it does, it does very well though. The free spins are the main attraction given the 2x multiplier and extra spins.
For players looking for a solid, all round entertainer of a slot, albeit one with a relatively low variance, Call of the Colosseum is a decent game to play. However, I prefer higher variance and for that you cannot go wrong with NextGen Gaming’s 300 Shields which has a similar feel to it and is their best game. If you like the Roman theme, Spartacus Gladiator of Rome by WMS is very, very good.
