Hook’s Heroes is a Net Entertainment-powered slot game with 5 reels and 20 paylines. Playable from 20p to £200 a spin, it has a pirate theme with colourful and cartoon graphics depicting various characters and a Caribbean style soundtrack to match – the game is available to play on mobile and tablet devices too.

Hook’s Heroes benefits from unique features including the Feature Spins mode and Free Spins mode – this allows you (during the Free Spin mode) to choose which exciting feature to activate for the free spins. You will notice different backgrounds are used in each mode of play to add to the experience.

There are 3 varying types of spin features that can be triggered at random during Free Spins or a single Feature Spin – these are the Fairy Feature, Mermaid Feature and Pirate Feature.

In the Fairy Feature, each spin benefits from between 2 and 5 overlay wild symbols on the reels at random. When you only get 2 wilds, 1 of them will be placed on one of the first 3 reels.

In the Mermaid Feature, all wins are subject to a 2x multiplier unless the win combination has 1 or more wild symbols – if that happens, wins are subject to a 4x multiplier!

In the Pirate Feature, things are a little different as wins aren’t calculated on paylines but rather visible symbols on the reels. If there are 4 of the same symbol anywhere on the reels, it will pay as if there are 4 of the same symbol on a winning payline.

Look out for the scatter symbol (the boy is the crocodile outfit) as 2 of these anywhere on the reels gives you 1 free Feature Spin with a randomly chosen feature (of the 3 highlighted above).

Now, if you get 3 scatters, you will trigger the Free Spins feature – you get to choose which of the 3 features you play during the Free Spins feature. If you get 4 or 5, you will get 2 or 3 Free Spins picks respectively. If 2 or 3 Free Spins rounds are won, you will then be taken back to choose your chosen Free Spin feature.

It may sound complicated but Hook’s Heroes is actually quite a simple game and easy to understand once it gets going. Variance wise, I found it to be low to medium. In the base game, Fairy Feature and Pirate Feature, the maximum you can win is 45 times your stake but this increases in the Mermaid Feature with 180 times your stake – this is due to the 4x multiplier basically.

I quite like Hook’s Heroes and its fun and quirky with plenty of bonus features. It reminds me a little of Robin Hood Shifting Riches graphically. It’s certainly not the best slot NetEnt has produced but a decent addition to the portfolio. For higher variance, I would highly recommend Dead or Alive which is a cult favourite or the fun Spiñata Grande.
