Halloween is a 5 reel, 50 payline slot powered by Microgaming. Based on the classic 1978 slasher film which was directed by John Carpenter, the Boogeyman is back in this branded title which benefits from free spins, cash prizes, stake multipliers, wandering reels and jumbo blocks. The game can be played from 50p to £200 a spin across desktop, mobile and tablet devices.
Visually, Halloween has a dark and sinister feel – symbols on the reels include matches, knitting needles and wool, telephones, clown masks, knives and guns. You will also see 4 characters from the film – Lynda, Annie, Loomis and Laurie. The latter is the most lucrative symbol giving you 30 times your stake for 5 across a payline. The Halloween logo is the wild symbol which replaces all symbols except the Bonus scatter.
Halloween comes with a Wandering Reel feature – these are groups of 3 reels that spin together. The Wandering Reel will stop in 1 of 3 positions which determines the reels and paylines played. More importantly, the Wandering Reel only contains Jumbo Blocks. Known as the Jumbo Blocks feature, Jumbo Blocks are large symbols that spin in multiple reels – i.e. the Loomis symbol will appear on 3 reels.
When it comes to main bonus features, look out for the Bonus scatter as 3 or more will trigger the Trick or Treat Wheel feature. You simply spin the wheel to win cash prizes of up to 10 times your stake. You carry on spinning (and collecting prizes) until you trigger the Boogeyman Bonus feature or Free Spins feature.
The Boogeyman Bonus feature allows you to pick from leaves to reveal cash prizes with a multiplier – the multiplier increases by 1 after each cash prize is won. If you manage to find all 10 cash bonuses, you will win an additional prize of 20 times your stake. If you find Michael, you will be rewarded half the prize amount and will end the feature – a knife will block Michael from ending the feature.
Finally, you have the Free Spins feature which is accesses if you find Lynda, Annie, Loomis or Laurie in the Trick or Treat Wheel feature. With 9 free spins granted, the character that triggered the feature will feature prominently during the free spins. This means the Wandering Reel will only display the relevant character for bigger wins. Unfortunately, you cannot win more free spins.
Overall, Halloween is another decent branded slot from Microgaming – visually, it reminds me of NextGen Gaming’s Psycho. Variance wise, it’s medium to high with maximum wins of up to 500 times your total stake on each free spin – you would need to high value Laurie to be the triggering character for this. Saying that, I do prefer other branded content from Microgaming such as the superb Jurassic World.
