Microgaming Dragon Shard Slot ReviewDragon Shard is powered by Microgaming and played on a 5 by 5 grid and has 40 paylines, With a fantasy theme featuring powerful heroes and elemental dragons, it uses the same game engine as Microgaming’s Fortunium. Playable from 5p to £200 a spin on all devices, it comes with mystery symbols, a Win Booster that gives you only high value symbol transformations and win both ways payouts and free spins with up to 3 mystery reels on each.

The slot looks amazing I must say – set in a fantasy kingdom, the elemental forces of the Fire Queen and the Ice King are in eternal battle for possession of the Dragon Shard ancient artefact. Symbols include clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades (low value symbols) as well as the Dragon Shard, Ice Dragon, Fire Dragon, the Ice King and Fire Queen.

With symbols double stacked, the latter 2 (Ice King and Fire Queen) are the most valuable symbols giving you 8 times your stake for 5 across a payline – they also appear stacked 5 symbols high. The Dragon Shard logo is the wild symbol and replaces all symbols bar the scatter – 3, 4 or 5 on a payline will give you 1, 4 or 20 times your total stake.

Dragon Shard comes with a Mystery Symbols feature – the mystery symbol will land on the reels and then transform into a low, high or wild symbol. This is randomly chosen.

Once you get started, you need to decide whether to use the Win Booster feature – if you don’t, your wins pay from left to right (bar the scatter which pays in any position). If you activate the Win Booster feature, you will benefit from win both ways payouts – it will cost you 2 times your stake though.

At minimum stakes, you will play at 10p per spin rather than 5p a spin – at maximum stakes, it will cost you £200 a spin rather than £100. If you use the Win Booster feature, mystery symbols will only reveal wilds or high symbols increasing your winning potential.

Dragon Shard comes with a Free Spins feature – this is played when you get 3 or more eye scatters in any position. With 10 free spins awarded, each free spin will contain Mystery Reels on reels 2, 3 or 4. The Mystery Reel will only contain mystery symbols. 3, 4 or 5 scatters will give you 1, 2 or 3 Mystery Reels. Every scatter appearing during the feature will reward you with an additional free spin.

Basically, the Free Spins feature makes it easier to get up to 3 wild reels on each free spin with the Mystery Reels – if you manage to fill the reels with wild symbols, you’ll win 800 times your total stake (per free spin). Medium variance, it’s the same as Fortunium but looks much better. If you like the fantasy theme, Microgaming’s Avalon II or Play ‘N Go’s Dragon Maiden should do the trick.
