Viking Fire is a Lightning Box Games slot with 5 reels and 40 paylines. Playable on desktop, mobile and tablet devices from 50p to £1,250 per spin, it has a viking theme and is all about the Free Games feature where you sink longships to reveal extra wilds and additional free spins.

Visually, Viking Fire is set in a typical viking village with green fields and hills as it’s backdrop. With a viking casually standing to the left of the reel set, symbols appear on a wooden structure which depict the theme nicely. Symbols on the reels include playing cards (K, Q, J, 10 and 9) and well as a dog, a sword-wielding viking princess, wizard and male viking king. The soundtrack has a Nordic folk feel to it.

Look out for the hammer symbol as this is the wild symbol and substitutes for all symbols except the bonus (scatter) – now, when the hammer wild is part of a winning combination, it will double the outcome. 5 wilds on a payline will result in a 1,500 times line stake win. The male viking gives you 750 times your line stake but doubles with a wild involved.

The bonus symbol is the scatter with 3 or more triggering the Free Games feature – if you get 5 on a payline, you will win 2,000 times your line stake. You then get to pick targets to reveal extra wild symbols and additional free spins. You can reveal a wild viking, wild princess, wild wizard, +1 free spin, +2 free spins or an ‘X’.

You get to carry on picking until you reveal 2 ‘X’s – the picking stage will finish and the free spins will begin. Initially, you will begin with 5 free spins but I think it’s more lucrative to reveal up to 3 extra wilds than get more free spins. Remember that wins involving a wild will double your outcome so in effect, wild wins are subject to a 2x multiplier.

I found Viking Fire to be a medium to high variance offering – all about the Free Games feature, I like the theme and the win potential. I’ve managed to play the feature a few times with 3 extra wilds and I won close to 500 times my stake on a couple of occasions. If you like extra wilds in the feature, Microgaming’s Dragonz is recommended. If it’s vikings you’re after, WMS’ Viking Vanguard is an excellent choice.
