It may sound like the name of a suburban takeaway but Dragon Palace is in fact another in the long line of Chinese-themed slots. Powered by Lightning Box Games, it’s a 5 reel, 243 ways to win game that comes with a bonus feature that offers up to 40 free spins with multipliers that can reach 15x. Start your jackpot quest from between 25p and £50 per spin.
Visually, Dragon Palace has a classical feel – the setting is an ancient temple which is guarded by roaring dragons. The symbols in the reels maintain the historic feel. Joining the lower value playing cards are a lotus flower, gold coin, turtle, koi carp and warrior – land 5 of the latter for a payout of 1,000 coins.
They’re joined by the red dragon which is the game’s wild – it only appears on the middle 3 reels but substitutes for everything bar the bonus. The palace is that bonus scatter – it’s the key to unlocking the Bonus feature. 3 palaces anywhere on the reels will get you 8 free spins. 4 and it increases to 12. Land 5 for a full complement of 20 free spins.
Keep a special eye on the wild dragon during the free spins – whenever it forms part of a winning combination, it will boost that payout by a multiplier. That figure will be 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x or even 15x depending on the fire breathing master dragon. If you get 3 or more palaces during the feature, you can retrigger the feature with a potential 40 free spins on offer.
We found Dragon Palace to be a medium volatility slot – the 243 ways to win game engine (winning combinations are formed when the same symbol lands on adjacent reels rather than in traditional paylines) keeps the base game action flowing nicely.
The game really hits its stride in the bonus feature though. The wild wins can make a massive difference here. Don’t expect to land the big 15x multiplier too often but watch out when you do.
Visually, Dragon Palace is fairly simple but very effective. The action plays out to an Asian-style backing track that certainly enhances the classical feel. You’d think that developers would get tired of creating Chinese-themed slots. There seems to be no end to the appetite for all things Sino from game developers and players though.
Dragon Palace isn’t an especially exotic example of the genre. It’s good solid fare though. And if you get lucky with those multipliers, it offers some nice winning opportunities as well. If you like the theme, there’s plenty of options with Playtech offering Jade Emperor and Sun Wukong.
