Based on the hit 1970s TV comedy starring Danny Devito, Taxi is a 5 reel, 25 payline video slot from Leander Games. It comes with a range of bonus features including instant cash bonuses, free spins with added wilds and a pick ’em round offering multiplier prizes. Get behind the wheel from between 25p and £125 per spin.
Set against a New York at night backdrop, the reels in Taxi features some of the main characters from the show. Look out for Bobby, Jim, Tony, Elaine and of course Louis (Danny Devito) who is the biggest payer, netting you 500 coins if you find a 5 symbol combination. They’re joined by low value playing card symbols from A to 10. The famous yellow New York taxicab is the wild. It substitutes for all other symbols apart from the bonus.
Find the Bonus symbol (the taxi meter) on reel 3 and you’ll trigger the Flag This Down feature – press start to flag down one of the taxis shown and in the process help yourself to a bonus prize for each trip the cab makes.
Look out for the free spins symbol (the telephone) on reels 1, 3 and 5 as it will trigger the Make It Out of the Garage Free Spins Bonus feature. Once active, you’ll be awarded 10 free spins. When the telephone symbol hits on reel 5 it will turn 1 character into a wild – you’ll also be awarded 2 extra free spins. It’s possible to gain up to 20 spins and turn every character symbol wild. The feature includes video clips from the show itself too.
Finally there’s the Let’s Get This Garage Moving Here! Bonus feature – find the loudhailer bonus symbol on reels 2, 3 and 4 to trigger this one. It’s a variation on the pick me round – Louis shouts the trips for the drivers and you have to try and choose the right character.
Match the driver and you’ll win a bonus. Louis will then shout another trip. The round ends after you’ve made 3 incorrect picks. At the end of the round, pick a taxi which will reveal a multiplier which will be applied to your bonus wins.
The visuals on show in Taxi are pretty good. Look out for photos of the cast as well as various cab associated accoutrements. The action plays out to a 1970s style, organ soundtrack which is punctuated by blasts of car horns. Shame the classic theme tune doesn’t appear though.
There’s a decent selection of features on show too. The overall variance is on the low side of medium. The extra wilds can make all the difference in the free spins round though and there is certainly the potential to drive off and get the cash meter flowing along nicely if luck is with you. It’s an ok slot game in my eyes but it doesn’t stand out to me. If you like branded slots, there are lots of choose from including Microgaming’s Jurassic Park, WMS Gaming’s KISS Shout It Out Loud and Playtech’s The Avengers.
