First impressions of Rise of the Vikings are superb – with the sea roaring away in the background, the reels are made up of a Viking longship. Symbols are set within wooden shields and include hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades as well as a quartet of marauding Vikings. The best of these is the female archer who pays 200 coins if you land 5 on a payline. The longship symbol is the wild – it doesn’t offer any pays itself but does replace everything bar the bonus and scatter.
Look out for the Throne Bonus symbol which lands on reel 5 only – when it hits, you’ll trigger the Throne Bonus feature where you’ll be awarded a coin win or possible entry into the Battle Bonus Free Spins feature. You can also trigger the feature by landing the free spins scatter on reels 1, 3 and 5 on the same spin.
The number of free spins awarded depends on the number on the scatter that lands on the 5th reel (5, 8 or 12). Before the feature begins, pick from the selection of shields to reveal which Viking’s special wild powers you’ll receive:
- Hilde Symbol – these lock in place when they hit and remain locked for the rest of the feature.
- Magnus Symbol – these explode to add even more wilds when they land.
- Ivar Symbol – when Ivar lands, up to 14 extra wilds can rain down onto the reels.
- Gunnar Symbol – land a Gunnar wild and it slides across the reels horizontally.
After you’ve picked your warrior, you’ll get to choose a weapon. These offer multipliers of between 2x and 5x when they form part of a winning combination. Look out for the +1 scatters that add extra free spins to your total.
Rise of the Vikings also offer the chance to up your stakes and play in Super Bet mode. This guarantees the full allocation of 12 free spins when you trigger the Battle Bonus Free Spins feature – it costs 50% more than your current stake. In Mega Bet mode, you’ll get to choose 2 weapons whose multipliers are combined – it costs 150% your stake (so £1 a spin becomes £2.50 per spin).
We’ve never seen anything from Axial Studios before but they’ve got a lot right in this debut offering. The design is very high-end and superbly done. The range of bonus features isn’t wide but the wild and multiplier extras on offer in Battle Bonus Free Spins feature offer plenty of variety and keep things fresh. We’ll certainly look out for more slots from this developer in the future. I also recommend you try Yggdrasil Gaming’s Vikings Go Berzerk which has a similar theme.
