The base game in Fire My Laser differs from any slot I’ve ever played. I’d go as far as to say this is the most unique title on the market at the moment. Instead of creating wins with paylines or clusters, bombs and lasers that land on the reels blow up symbols. Each symbol has an individual value that pays out if it gets destroyed. Any destroyed symbols vanish, allowing cascades to take place.

The bombs and lasers are the most critical aspect. When they land on the reels, they are either active or dormant. If they’re active, they will destroy symbols depending on their function. Any dormant symbols that get hit by a bomb or laser become active. The 4 potential weapons are as follows:

• Small Bomb: blows up a 3×3 area on the screen.
• Big Bomb: blows up a 5×5 area on the screen.
• X-Laser: fires a one-symbol wide laser from the weapon in the X shape.
• Super Laser: fires a three-symbol wide laser out from the weapon in the shape of an X. It is more potent than the X-Laser, destroying all shields.

Special symbols can appear with a shield and require multiple hits to destroy. Multipliers between 2x and 10x take 2 hits. Multipliers between 15x and 500x, Alien Attack Spins, and Extermination Spins all take 3 hits.

After all cascades end, there’s a chance for an Orbital Bombardment to trigger. It triggers between 3 and 7 explosions on the reels. Each one covers a 2×2 area and allows new cascades to begin.

Alien Attack Spins

If you unlock the Alien Attack Spins shield, it awards 8 free spins. During this round, the gameplay mechanics of the base game remain active. However, the multipliers are persistent to a degree.

The multiplier will add up and remain in place on every spin, but it only becomes active when unlocking new multipliers. For example, unlocking a 3x multiplier on the first spin will apply it to the final win. The multiplier isn’t applied if there are no new multipliers on the next 2 spins. Adding another 3x multiplier on the fourth spin applies a 6x multiplier to that win.

If you unlock another free spin symbol during this round, it adds 2 extra spins to your total.

Extermination Spins

The Extermination Spins feature awards 12 spins, and the multipliers are persistent throughout. You don’t have to wait to trigger a new multiplier. Once it’s unlocked, it’s active for every win. Like in the Alien Attack round, destroying the shield for the free spins symbols awards an additional 2 spins.

I’m a big fan of what Hacksaw Gaming has done with Fire My Laser. Instead of being content with rehashing the same gameplay mechanics repeatedly, this developer has taken a risk. Fire My Laser is a new way to play video slots, providing one of the most fun experiences on the market.

The only minor negative is that the maximum payout doesn’t compete with the top wins in the industry. If Fire My Laser offered over 25,000x the stake, I’d instantly boost it to a 5/5. In terms of gameplay, this is my favourite game of 2024, and I recommend everyone to try it—at least the free demo version above.
