The Tropicool 3 slot is played on a 6×6 grid and has 46,656 ways to win. Wins begin from the leftmost reel and will only pay from left to right on adjacent reels. While it may look like a grid slot with how the reels look, it’s not as you only need 3 or more matching symbols to land a winner.

Theme: a journey to Egypt or Vegas?

The original Tropicool slot and the sequel were both set on an icy island, but this 3rd instalment looks like it’s in Egypt with the pyramids in the background. The soundtrack is also a nod to Egypt and so are the symbols. You don’t see snow in Egypt usually, though, but we’ve got some here as the icy trend continues.

The visuals are great and I like how they seem to have blended in the Tropicool look with a little of the Cygnus look. Land the Bonus Game and the background turns from day to night, which makes it look like it could be a Vegas party scene rather than Ancient Egypt. It could be both. Nonetheless, it looks and sounds great.

On the reels, the lower-paying symbols are made up of different coloured fruits. The higher-paying symbols include a lizard, a snake, a scarab beetle and a couple of birds. The bird symbol is the most lucrative, paying 1, 1.25, 1.5 or 3 x your total stake for 3, 4, 5 or 6 in combination respectively.

The game’s Wild is a big pink W, which substitutes for all paying symbols. A winning combination of only Wilds will pay as the highest paying symbols. There’s also a Locked Wild that can become available. This is charged to last for 3 wins and will be removed from the grid after the last win.

There are 5 bonus features to enjoy in the Tropicool 3 slot game. From Cool Reels and Elmo’s Revenge to numerous feature symbols and free spins, there’s a lot going on. Let’s run you through all of the features, beginning with the Cool Reel feature.

Cool Reel feature

You’ll notice a cool reel above the usual set of reels in the screenshot above. It consists of 3 levels, and each new win will generate a Cool Reel drop from the first level. The rows consist of feature symbols, Bonus symbols and empty symbols. Feature symbols will become active when they drop down into the main grid. Empty symbols are removed.

The symbols from the first row in the Cool Reel drop down into the main grid after each winning combination. All symbols will roll to the left and right repeatedly as far downwards as possible. Gravity also applies to the Cool Reel and then it will be refilled from the right, pushing all symbols to the left. This process continues until no new winners are formed.

Elmo’s Revenge feature

When the Elmo symbol reaches the leftmost column, this bonus feature is activated and the complete Cool Reel drops into the main grid. An Elmo symbol that ends up on the bottom row in columns 2 to 6 will be removed and dropped down again into the column 1 step further to the left if it’s possible to do so.

Feature Symbols

There are 3 feature symbols available in the game. These are:

• Multiplier – Increases the win multiplier by up to 25x when dropping down from the Cool Reel.
• Row Swap – Replaces payout symbols on a line with the same symbol.
• Mystery – Reveals a paying symbol at the end of a drop.

Bonus Game

Land 3, 4, 5 or 6 Bonus Scatters to trigger this bonus feature. You will start with 6, 9, 12 or 15 free spins respectively. During this bonus round, the Cool Reel contains the Extra Drops feature symbols that can add 1, 2 or 3 extra drops when dropping down from the Cool Reel. The Cool Reel is re-populated with new feature symbols for every free drop. Locked Wilds in the main grid will remain until they’ve fully been used.

Land 3 or more Scatters as well as an Elmo symbol in the base game and you will trigger the Super Bonus Game. This plays out in the same way as the normal Bonus Game, but the only difference will be that 1 Elmo symbol will always be in play on the main grid.

ELK Studios has moved Tropicool 3 from an icy climate to a Vegas-like location and blended in some mechanics seen in the Cygnus series of games. It’s a different look from the previous 2 games in the series but it still packs a punch with 25,000 x bet max wins and some great bonus features.

I was hoping that Tropicool 3 was going to be better than the extremely popular 2nd instalment in the series. I must admit that I don’t think it is. It’s different, though, which is a plus as it would have been underwhelming to see the same slot again with slight tweaks. They’ve tried to mix in a bit of Cygnus, which was a nice idea, but I’m not sure it’s worked. In my opinion, they’ve arguably lost some of the uniqueness that made Tropicool so good. The bonus features and the gameplay on offer here are still good that’s for sure.

Ignore the 94% RTP as that’s just what you need to expect from ELK now. That seems to be the way a lot of other providers are going too, so expect to see lower RTP rates across the board in the future with many slot providers. The 25,000 x bet max win potential is still generous and matches the previous release.
