I’m a fan of cluster pay mechanics, so the Pirots X slot game instantly appealed to me. It uses a 5×5 grid as standard, so it requires 5 or more symbols to create a win. This approach differs from traditional online slots, and I like how it creates a puzzle layout.

You can wager between 20p and £100 in the Pirots X slot, which is a solid range. It covers everything low to high rollers need, ensuring all players can access the game. The spin controls are on the right-hand side, and you can set autoplay or turbo spins if you’re not at a UK online casino. The Pirots X RTP is the first major downside. Just like the other games in the series, it’s set at 94%. The low RTP removes some of its appeal. I found high volatility while researching for my Pirots X review, which makes sense in relation to the top win.

I felt the volatility with every spin, and the super spins round led to me grabbing almost 1,200x my stake, which is a decent return. When you start playing at Pirots X casinos, you first notice the quality of the graphics. However, the sounds are just as impressive. They play tunes that fit the theme, and the reels make a satisfying sound as the different features play out. It’s an immersive experience, and I chuckled more than once as the parrots threw out some stereotypical pirate phrases.

The theme is excellent overall, and it puts itself right in the mix with the best new online slots.

Pirots X Mobile

I really like the Pirots X mobile slot in portrait mode. However, it’s slightly challenging to use in the landscape mode. It might be the mobile casino I used, but I found it hard to get it into full-screen mode. In portrait, it was fine, though. The graphics looked great, the sounds were superb, and the controls were responsive. Overall, it’s a solid mobile version, but making landscape mode easier to access is an area for improvement.

The Pirots X bonus features come along thick and fast. As it’s a cluster pay game, it instantly appeals to me; they’re my favourite type of casino game. They operate similarly to Megaways slots, offering many ways to create wins. The base game features multiple extras, which carry over into the bonus rounds.

Cascading Reels

As is typically the case with cluster pay slots, there are cascading reels here. Whenever a win lands, the symbols are removed from the reels, and new ones fall into place. The winning clusters leave a wild behind, which can help to create new wins. Multiple wilds on a single cluster will combine to create multiplier wilds.

Random Features

During any spin, the Pirots at the top of the screen can trigger a random feature. Three potential random features can appear at any time:

• The Bomb—When a bomb lands, it explodes when all cascades are finished. It destroys all symbols apart from wilds, scatters, or large symbols. Additionally, it increases the size of the reels to 7×7
• Random Treasure Chest—It can place scatters, nests, or wilds on the reels. If it places a nest, one of the Pirots will move to the reels. When the current cascade has finished, they will collect all symbols of their colour that they can reach, creating a multiplier for all subsequent wins. Low-value symbols add one to the multiplier, and high ones add two
• Big Symbol Release—When this triggers, it drops a symbol of up to 4×4 onto the reels. It destroys all regular symbols in its way and can potentially create huge wins

Free Spins

There are two free spin rounds available:

• The first awards five spins and triggers from three standard bonus scatters. During this round, everything is the same as the base game, but when the Pirots collect multipliers, they remain until the end of the round. If you land a +1 symbol, it will award an extra spin to your total
• The super free spin round begins when you land a super scatter along with two standard scatters. It’s similar to the normal free spins, offering five spins. However, it improves the round by playing on the full 7×7 grid all the way through. Additionally, three treasure chests are added to the reels before every spin, increasing the win potential of the round

Bonus Buy (Not Available in the UK)

A bonus buy feature is available in Pirots X. You can pay 500 x your stake to trigger the super free spins or 100 x your stake for the standard free spins. You can also boost the chances of features being triggered by paying more per spin.

Judging Pirots X purely on its gameplay puts it in a strong position. It’s fast-paced, has some great features, and is fun to play. However, looking deeper at the maths models that underpin it stops it from competing at the top level.

Pros

• Plenty of base game features are available
• The super free spin rounds are fantastic
• A top win of 10,000 x

Cons

• The RTP is well below the market average

Even if I were being kind, there’s no way to claim that Pirots X competes with the best RTP slots on the market. With modern slots, 94% is just not enough to appeal to serious players, even with the 10,000 x stake maximum win.

Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean I don’t like Pirots X. There is plenty to like for fans of cluster pays with cascading reels. However, the low RTP and high volatility can make Pirots X a frustrating experience. There’s enough here to score 4.1/5 but not enough to make it a must-play.
