Pirots 3 is played on a 6-reel, 7-row machine and uses the CollectR game mechanic. Winners are created when one of the game’s 4 bird symbols collects gemstones of its own matching colour. These trails of gemstones can be vertical or horizontal. The more gems the bird collects, the better the payout. The setup is a little unusual for online slots, so this is a game where you should really try and have a go in demo mode first.

Bet levels range from between 20p and £100 per spin. Click on the coins icon, then choose from the 12 stake levels. If you’re in a jurisdiction where it’s allowed, you can run up to 100 autospins. This isn’t available at UK slot sites.

Theme – Head to a Wild West Theme Park

I really liked the design in the Pirots 3 slot game. A dusty Main Street from a Wild West town forms the backdrop to the reels. Or maybe it’s a theme park, given there’s a roller coaster in the distance.

Either way, those reels are made up of blue, green, purple and red gemstones and birds of the same colours. The birds move around the grid, collecting symbols of the same colour on each spin. There’s also a bird that’s locked up in a cage. This bandit bird can collect gems of all colours when released, as well as drop feature symbols.

The backdrop is detailed, but the symbols stand out sharply. There are loads of moving pieces here, but the visuals are up to the job.

A whistly soundtrack plays while you spin, which is a nod to the classic spaghetti western movies. This revs up into a souped-up version of a Scott Joplin-style ragtime tune when you trigger the free drops round.

Pirots 3 is about as far as you can get from classic or even new online slots. The gameplay here is really rather complicated, and there are loads of extras to get stuck into.

Collection Meter and Feature Symbols

Winning symbols are collected in the Collection Meter above the reels. Fill the meter and a feature symbol is released onto the reels below. It’s possible to land up to 3 feature symbols in one go. Here’s what the different Feature Symbols can deliver.

Collected Upgrade All	This triggers the escape of the bandit bird when the standard birds have finished collecting.
Key	It can collect any colour gemstone. If the bandit lands next to a bird, a duel follows. If the bird wins, the bandit feature ends. If the bandit wins, the escape continues and it carries on collecting. If the bandit defeats all 4 birds, the bandit collects any remaining symbols on the game grid and a payout is made. The Bandit Coin Game feature then follows.
The Bandit	A cluster of gems all transform into the same colour as the bird that collected the symbol. It can also convert random gems into feature symbols.
Collected Transform	This symbol allows birds to cross empty positions on the game grid and collect more symbols.
Peanut	This symbol allows birds to cross empty positions on the game grid and collect more symbols.
Dynamite	This triggers an explosion when the birds can’t collect any more symbols. A new re-drop takes place on an expanded 8x7 game grid. If there are any pending feature drops, they drop before the new explosion takes place. The dynamite comes in 2 sizes. One explodes a small portion of the game grid, the other blows up the whole lot.
Wild	This substitutes for any gem at the current payout level. The black bandit wild is the equivalent of the top-paying symbol.
Coin	The amount shown on the coin is multiplied by your total stake. The Max Win coins does exactly what you’d expect it to do.

Coin Game

As I alluded to above, the Coin Game triggers when you clear the game grid. Bags of coins and scorpion symbols are dropped onto the grid. You’ll then see birds or the bandit get off a train. They toss lassos and grab sacks of coins. If the sack contains coins, they’re collected. If they contain a scorpion, your bird dies. The round ends when no birds are left. The collected coins are awarded as a prize.

Showdown Feature

Birds next to each other that can’t collect any more symbols can perform a ‘switcheroo’ and swap places. When 3 birds are next to each other, they trigger the Showdown Feature, just the kind of extra you’d expect from Wild West slots.

The birds then move away from each other, removing symbols as they go. They then fire a volley of shots at the grid. Any gems that are hit are removed. Bonus, Super Bonus, Key and Coin symbols are collected, and Dynamite symbols are ignited. Birds are then re-dropped, and new symbols drop into empty positions on the grid.

Train Heist Feature

Trigger this feature when a bird collects a symbol in a position with a train backdrop and can also collect symbols on a train position on the opposite side of the grid. If the bird can reach the symbols on the other side naturally, the Train Heist is not triggered. The bird finishes collecting, and a train arrives, awarding up to 3 random feature symbols. The train then progresses around the grid, dropping the bird off on the opposite side, where it continues collecting.

Bonus Game

Collect three bonus symbols during a single round to trigger this Bonus Game. Your reward is 5 free drops on an expanded set of reels. Any pending feature symbols drop onto the grid before the first free drop. The collection meter doesn’t reset with each new drop during the Bonus Game. The gem payout level is persistent during the Bonus Game, too. Each Bonus symbol that appears adds one more free drop.

X-Iter (not available in the UK)

Elk Studios’ version of the bonus buy is the X-Iter, which allows you to pay for an extra. Here are the options:

• Bonus Hunt – Quadruple the chance of triggering the bonus on a single drop. Cost = 3 x stake.
• Bandit Jailbreak – One drop when the Bandit Escape feature is triggered. Cost = 25 x stake.
• Coin Game Trigger – Cost = 50 x stake.
• Bonus Game Trigger – Cost = 100 x stake.
• Super Bonus Game Trigger – Cost = 500 x stake.

Pirots 3 by ELK Studious is a game rich in features and special symbols, but the gameplay might take some getting used to and is not suitable for beginners.

There’s a whole lot going on in Pirots 3. If you think the best slots come with plenty of variety, you’ll get precisely that here. Sometimes, you can have too much of a good thing, though, and at times, it felt like there was too much going on in Pirots 3. This is definitely a slot that warrants some time in demo mode before risking your hard-earned cash.

The wide range of extras means that there’s usually something happening, even given the game’s high volatility.

The design is terrific, as usual from an Elk release, and the 10,000 x stake max win is certainly respectable. The RTP is rather skinny at 94%, though.

I enjoyed Pirots 3 with a few reservations. If you liked the first two Pirots adventures, expect more of the same here, with even more extras.
