Theme – not your classic car chase

Freeway 7 is the latest instalment in ELK Studio’s Classic Series. Like it’s cousin slot Route 777, it’s set on the open road but, this time around, it’s more car chase than road trip.

The sunset canyon backdrop and police badge give the slot a dose of Americana, whilst the blazing sirens and fast-paced soundtrack spur you on to outrun the law. 

As you would expect from a classic slot, the symbols are simple and nostalgic. Traditional fruit symbols make up the lower half of the payable, whilst higher value symbols include different coloured 7s. The highest value symbol is the Stars and Stripes 7s. Dressed in the American flag, this symbol pays out 7.5 x your total bet should you land three of them on a payline.

The Freeway 7 slot also features a blue Wild symbol which substitutes for all other symbols, aside from the bonus symbols. The bonus and super bonus symbols are represented by the Sargent’s police badge and these trigger the free spins round.

Freeway 7 Bonus Features

The Freeway 7 slot comes with 4 bonus features, though some aren’t as innovative as they first seem. The most excitement comes from the Bonus and Super Bonus Games, which reward you with free spins and extra multipliers. The Road Block Nudge feature is also valuable, giving you respins in the base game.

Road Block Nudge Feature

The Road Block Nudge feature is similar to the Nudging Respin feature in Toro 7s, another slot in ELK’s classic series. When you land identical symbol combinations on reels 1 and 3, you’ll be awarded 5 respins. During these respins, reels 1 and 3 step down 1 position on each respin, whilst the middle reel spins as normal.

If any bonus symbols appear on reels 1 or 3 during the Road Block Nudge respins, they are also nudged towards the centre and locked. This increases your chances of triggering another bonus feature and achieving some big wins. 

Bonus Game Feature

The Bonus Game featured is triggered by landing 3 of the police badge Bonus Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. You then receive 10 free spins with added multipliers. You can track the number of free spins you have left via the counter above the reels, and here you can also see which multipliers are active.

Each symbol carries its own multiplier from 2 x to 15 x your total bet, and at the start of the round all symbols are active. When you land a winning combination, the contributing symbol’s multiplier is added to the total win multiplier. That symbol then becomes deactivated, meaning it can no longer increase the total win multiplier.

For instance, if you land a winning combination of Cherries, this gives you a 1 x multiplier. A second winning combination of Bar symbols would give you a 2 x multiplier, making your total win multiplier 3 x your total bet. If your next free spin gave you 3 more Bar symbols, however, your total multiplier wouldn’t increase, as you’ve already collected the multiplier for this symbol.

Landing 3 bonus symbols during the bonus game will retrigger the feature and reactivate all symbols. Any winning spin will also give you another free spin, so the feature can actually keep going for a while giving you more chances to unlock the higher multipliers.

You can also trigger the Road Block Nudge feature during the bonus round. In doing so, you get 5 respins on top of however many free spins you have left. Wins during these respins also give you extra free spins, and active symbols still increase the total win multiplier. Finally, if you trigger the Bonus Game feature and the Road Block Nudge feature at the same time in the base game, the Bonus Game plays out first. 

Super Bonus Game Feature

The Super Bonus Game feature is triggered by landing a combination of Bonus symbols and Super Bonus symbols anywhere on the reels. The rules of this feature are exactly the same as the normal Bonus Game feature, except the win multiplier starts at a higher level, and each win always increases its value (symbols remain active no matter how many times you collect them). 

X-iter feature

Freeway 7 Review Summary – a road rage slot lacking raging wins

The Freeway 7 slot is an enjoyable instalment in ELK’s Classic Series range of games. Naturally, it will mainly appeal to fans of 3-reelers and retro themes, although we’d encourage other types of players to try it too. The bonus features add some exciting twists, and the fast-paced animations and soundtrack help to keep the energy high. 

It’s worth remembering, though, that Freeway 7 has a reduced RTP rate of 94%. This is disappointing, especially when you compare the game to its predecessors, Toro’s 7 or Route 777. Both these games have higher RTP rates of 95 and 96.3% respectively, and very similar features.

When it comes to the gameplay, the Road Block Nudge respins feature is quite valuable, but you need to activate the Bonus Game feature to really collect the big wins. The Super Bonus game is even more fruitful, though it doesn’t trigger often. 

Overall, Freeway 7 is a decent 3-reel slot in terms of bonus features and design, but it isn’t as exhilarating as it first appears. The previously mentioned Toro’s 7 slot is a much better option for fans of ELK’s Classic Series, as it boasts a higher RTP and 10,000 x bet max win.
