Take on the Mayan Snake God Quetzalcoatl in the Coba slot from ELK Studios. This 7×7 grid slot uses Cluster Pays and Avalanches. Winning clusters fill the Snake Progress Meter which leads to snakes appearing on the grid. These snakes can eat symbols to grow in length and move across other snakes to give you multiplier wilds. Multiple multiplier wilds sees their values multiplied for wins of up to 25,000 x your total bet. Find out about this unique grid slot in our Coba review.

Coba Slot RTP, Details & Wager Limits

Reels/Paylines: 7×7 + Cluster Pays

Stakes Range: 20p to £100 per spin

RTP: 95%

Max Win: 25,000 x bet per spin

The Coba slot game is played on a 7×7 grid and uses a Cluster Pays engine. Winning combinations are formed when 5 or more identical symbols appear adjacent to another one. The greater the number of symbols, the bigger the payout.

For more information, find out how grid slots work.

Bet options vary between 20p to £100 a spin. Look out for the Coins icon. Click on it to show all 12 available stake options conveniently on a screen. If you’re not playing in the UK, there’s an Auto function where you can choose up to 100 auto spins. Additionally, there is a Quick Play (Turbo Mode) option within the Settings section.

The Coba RTP rate is 95%. This is below the 96% norm but not by much. The volatility is in the medium category and rated 6/10 by ELK Studios. The hit frequency rate is 38.9% which means a winning cluster will land every 2.57 spins on average.

The win potential is very high as you can win up to 25,000 x your total bet per spin. This will come from the multiplier wilds (more details below).

Theme – join the God of snakes + raid the ancient city for treasures

Theme: Mayan

High Value Symbol: Gold Snake Skull

Compatibility: Mobile, Tablet, Desktop

coba-slot-base-game

With a Mayan theme, the Coba slot is based on the Mayan Snake God Quetzalcoatl which has protected the ancient city of Coba for thousands of years. Set in a jungle with the ancient city in the backdrop, the design has that distinct ELK Studios look and feel. Your aim is to explore the city’s chambers and overcome the spirit’s perilous traps to claim its treasures.

The soundtrack is enchanting and rhythmic with animal noises adding to the atmosphere. Symbols on the 7×7 grid include 3 animal tokens as well as green, blue and red gems. The highest paying symbol is the Gold Snake Skull which pays 500 x your total bet for 15 or more in a cluster.

There is also a wild symbol which substitutes for all symbols above. The other symbol you’ll come across on the grid is the snake wild (again, more details in the Bonus Features section).

Coba Mobile

Producing using HTML5 technology, Coba is available to play on all devices such as mobiles, tablets, laptops and PCs. ELK Studios is actually a mobile-first provider/developer meaning they cater to mobile players primarily. The 7×7 grid works rather well on a smartphone, whether it operates using iOS, Windows or Android.

Coba Bonus Features

The Coba slot game has 4 bonus features. This unique slithering cluster pays game comes with avalanches and snakes that increase your winning cluster and add multiplier wilds into the mix.

Avalanche feature

When a winning cluster is created, the Avalanche feature comes into play. Each symbol of a winning cluster is removed from the grid and a point is added to the Snake Progress Meter. The remaining symbols drop down and new symbols drop in to fill the empty positions. The process carries on repeating itself until no more new winning clusters are formed. By the way, this a common feature amongst grid slots.

Snake feature

When a winning cluster is formed, the winning symbols add progress to the Snake Progress Meter. With 4 levels, activating any of the levels will release snakes onto the grid. Here’s what you will get in the Snake feature:

Level Snakes on Grid
1 1
2 2
3 3
4 6

A snake is a linear cluster of symbols that moves along the grid for each drop/spin. The first symbol the snake moves over becomes the Snake symbol (this is indicated on the snake’s head).

The snake’s length is at least 5 symbols long and has a head and body. The symbols are indicated by a golden frame. These symbols can be in a survival or non-survival state indicated with a yellow or blue tail that isn’t part of the snake. Anyway, the snake will always for a winning cluster or be part of a larger winning cluster.

If a snake moves over the same symbol as the Snake symbol, the snake eats the symbol and grows in length by an extra symbol. This extra symbol goes into survival state (yellow tail). It then remains on the grid for the next avalanche/spin.

When the snake doesn’t move over a Snake symbol to eat, it dies and is removed from the grid before the next spin. If a snake crosses and bites its own snake body, it will die and be removed from the grid. Think of the classic retro Snake game that was found on Nokia phones in the 90s.

Crossing feature

If a snake moves across another snake, the Crossing feature comes into play. The snakes then create a 2x wild multiplier in this position. Any more snakes moving across the Multiplier Wild will double the multiplier to 4x, 8x etc.

Finally, several multiplier wilds in different positions that are part of a winning cluster will see the multiplier values multiplied by each other.

X-iter feature

As with all ELK Studios slots these days, there is an X-iter feature. With 5 modes available, the options costs between 2 and 500 x your total stake. This isn’t available in the UK though.

Mode Cost Description
Pray to Quetzalcoatl 2 x bet 3 snakes added to grid when you reach Levels 1 + 2
Viper Active 10 x bet 1 snake is released on the grid (Level 1)
Boa Constrictor 25 x bet Begin at Level 1 with longer snakes
Quetzalcoatl 100 x bet Begin at Level 1 with more snakes (3 snakes at Level 1 + 2)
Coba! 500 x bet Begin at Level 4 with 6 snakes

Originality

The Coba slot is something of a new direction for a grid slot. Superbly designed, the blocky visuals work really well with the Cluster Pays mechanic. The Mayan theme has been widely used by slot providers but ELK Studios have nailed it in my opinion.

It’s all about filling the Snake Progress Meter when then brings snakes into play. Growing the snake length is key as this increases your chances of triggering the Crossing feature and adding multiplier wilds into the mix. Once you get to Levels 3 and 4, the significant number of snakes in play can lead to a whole grid of winning symbols and Multiplier Wilds. These can then multiply by each other for huge wins of up to 25,000 x bet per spin.

The only downside is the lack of free spins but there’s enough going on with the snakes and Multiplier Wilds to make the gameplay exciting. I would recommend playing the Coba demo above as it feels more complicated than it actually is. Just remember that snakes create clusters and multiplier wilds.

Overall, Coba is another superb slot from ELK Studios. Brilliantly designed, it offers big win potential and unusual gameplay that makes it stand out against other grid slots.

If you want more snakes, Playtech’s Anaconda Wild 2 gives you respins with Anaconda Wilds turning symbols wild. With multipliers up to 25x available, it can lead to 6,626 x bet max wins on your final respin.

Pros
  • 25,000 x bet max wins
  • Unique grid slot
  • Multiplying multiplier wilds
Cons
  • 95% RTP rate lower than 96% slots average
