I spotted a 5×7 set of reels in the Catemple slot game. It’s a unique layout, which makes sense due to its game mechanics. Instead of paylines, it uses scatter pays. As a result, the wins can be created anywhere. It’s similar to Megaways slots in that there are many ways to win. You need at least 7 symbols anywhere on the reels to create a win, which I thought was a lot when playing the free slots version.

You can wager between 20p and £100 in the Catemple slot. It’s a standard amount that provides for all forms of players, from low to high budgets. The stake controls are on the left, and the spin button is on the right. I wasn’t too keen on this while researching for my Catemple review, as I’d prefer them closer to each other. A turbo spin option allows you to set an autoplay round. However, this option isn’t available when playing at a UK online casino.

The Catemple RTP is set at 94%. However, it does feature RTP ranges and can drop as low as 87%. It’s quite low, so finding the best UK slot sites to play the game is vital. It’s advertised as a medium volatility game, but it felt like a high volatility while playing it.

You can grab a Catemple max win of up to 10,000x your stake. It seems to be a standard win size for most new online slots. Although it’s a good payout, I’d like to see some variety. It wouldn’t hurt for some games to pay out 10,035x or 11,250x, just something to help them stand out from the crowd. The best win I managed during the Catemple demo was almost 1,500x my stake.

Theme—A Fun Switch from the Norm

So many slots with an Egyptian theme follow the same tired path. An adventurer has stumbled onto a hidden tomb full of treasure. Sure, it was fun when Indiana Jones and Lara Croft did it, but it’s been done now. Fortunately, ELK Studios has taken a different path for Catemple—it’s great to see new slots taking risks with their themes, and it works here.

The cat is at the front and centre of the screen, putting the symbols at an angle and making it look like a conveyor belt. It has a similar look to the mobile game Coin Dozer, which is quite unique. There are plenty of colours on display, so it pops out, and every symbol has lots of detail.

The sounds are equally good, covering a traditional theme and some excellent sound effects. It matches the theme and ensures Catemple is a fun experience.

It’s also possible for a max win symbol to land, which instantly takes the total payout to 10,000x. Collecting a multiplier symbol applies to all subsequent wins on that spin, but it resets on the next spin. Take a look at all that’s in play.

The Mystery symbol reveals one of the feature symbols:

Paw Strike

The Paw Strike symbol removes all non-winning symbols and moves the golden coins to the Collect Zone.

How the Collect Zone Works

Mystery symbols can land on the reels, but they don’t always need to land in the Collect Zone to trigger. They can reveal golden symbols, which require a landing in the Collect Zone.

However, if they reveal a Wild, Hot Wild, or Paw Strike, they can land anywhere. The Paw Strike removes all non-golden symbols from the reels, and the Hot Wild spreads between one and three Wilds to the reels, potentially adding more Hot Wilds, which in turn spread.

Free Drops

Whenever you land a bonus scatter in the Collect Zone, it awards you three Free Drops. Every extra bonus you collect when triggering the round awards two extra drops, up to a maximum of nine. It increases the Collect Zone to two rows, and the multiplier is persistent throughout the round.

If a drop doesn’t award a win, it doesn’t use up any of your Free Drops and increases the multiplier by one. Whenever you collect a bonus symbol during the round, it adds an extra drop to your total.

Super Free Drops

If you collect a Super Bonus symbol, you will also receive three Super Free Drops. It’s the same as the standard Free Drops, but it increases the size of the Collect Zone to three

X-iter Buy Feature (Not Available in the UK)

You can jump directly to the bonus rounds if you’re playing outside of the UK. There are five options you can purchase:

The standard Free Drops feature is available for 100x your stake and awards 7 Free Drops. If you pay 500x your stake, you get 9 drops in the Super Bonus round. Top that off with the Bonus Hunt, tripling your chances of triggering a Bonus game.

Catemple is a fun game with a lot going on. However, the maths model that controls it holds it back. It advertises medium volatility, but it just feels higher. The addition of increasing multipliers without using Free Drops alleviates this, but in the base game, it can be frustrating.

I enjoyed playing Catemple, but the maths holds it back. The 94% RTP is another issue, as it’s below the average for the market. Although there’s a 10,000x the stake maximum win, you’re unlikely to get close to it. It’s not all negative, though. The gameplay is genuinely good. Even though it feels volatile, the cascades and multipliers are fantastic. I like the Collect Zone, too. It’s something new and adds some innovation to the game.

The underlying maths model stops me from giving this a higher score. It’s a good game, and it’s fun to play. But, the slight issues with the RTP and variance mean I can only give it 4.3/5.
