Gold Slot Review

Blingy design and a classic soundtrack take players back to the 1980s in the glorious slice of nostalgia that is the Gold slot. Created by Big Time Gaming, it’s a 5 reel, 20 payline game that has the Spandau Ballet classic blasting away while you spin. The gameplay highlights here are decent enough too. Any base game win that includes a wild symbol doubles the payout. Trigger the Free Spins feature for up to 180 free spins with a 3x multiplier. Combine with the doubling wild for a 6x multiplier. Does this slot deserve a gold medal? Find out in our detailed Gold review.

Gold Slot Details & Wager Limits

The setup in the Gold slot is very simple. The action takes place on 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 fixed paylines. To create a winning combination, land 3, 4 or 5 matching symbols or wilds from left to right on a payline, starting from reel 1. In fact, with the wild and the highest paying standard symbols, you’ll only need 2 symbols from the leftmost reel.

Stake levels in Gold range from 20p to £500 per spin. Use the arrows to the right of the reels to adjust until you find a level you’re comfortable with. Payouts in the paytable are shown in coins rather overall stake.

The Gold RTP is 95.025% which is a little on the low side. The volatility here is in the medium to high range. Expect a win in over a third of spins as the hit frequency rate is 35.94%.

The maximum win in the base game is 8,450 x your total stake. This rises to a top potential payout of 12,500 x your total in the free spins feature.

Theme – Audio and Design Features – 80s bling featuring the Spandau Ballet classic

gold-slot-base-game

The Gold slot was never likely to be an elegant and understated affair but even darting King of Bling Bobby George might baulk at quite how much gold is on display here. With an 80s bling theme, the reels are dripping in gold. Graphically, it’s not as sharp as newer Big Time Gaming slots as it was released in January 2013.

You’ll hear a snippet of the Spandau Ballet classic ‘Gold’ song in the base game. This revs up to the full effect Tony Hadley during the free spins. Combined with the gold visuals, it’s quite the spectacle.

The reels are made up of A to 9 gold symbols, each of which contains an embossed gemstone. Next come a gold ring and a gold credit card followed by the watch. The most lucrative standard symbols are the gold car and the triple bars symbols, both of which pay 37.5 x your total stake if you land 5 across a payline.

There’s also a gold briefcase which is a wild symbol that substitutes for everything apart from the scatter. That scatter is the gold disc. Trigger the bonus round and the action moves into a gold bank vault which is even blingier than the base game.

Despite being released in 2013, Gold is available to play on mobile, tablet and desktop devices. You’ll find the same combination of simple gameplay and super flashy design in all versions.

Gold Bonus features

The soundtrack pumping away in the background takes players back to the 1980s. There’s a rather retro feel to the gameplay here too which is rather simple with free spins and multipliers to the fore. There’s a total of 2 bonus features.

Double Wild feature

Land a winning combination in the base game that includes a wild gold briefcase among the standard symbols and the Double Wild feature is triggered. As a result, a 2x multiplier is brought into play with the payout doubled.

The only occasion when the 2x multiplier isn’t active is when you land a winner that’s made up entirely of wild symbols. The wild can be very lucrative in its own right. Land 2, 3, 4 or 5 wilds across a payline and you’ll receive an award equal to 0.5, 10, 100 or 500 x your total stake.

Free Spins feature

The gold disc is the game’s scatter symbol. Land 3 or more gold discs anywhere on the reels (they don’t have to be on a payline) and you’ll win a payout equal to 5, 20 or 100 x your total stake. You’ll also activate the Free Spins feature.

You’ll then go on to play 15 free spins. Boosting your winning chances here is a 3x multiplier so all payouts are trebled. The only exception being if you land a 5-on-a-payline wild combination. If you combine a win with a wild, you’ll benefit from a 6x multiplier effectively.

Landing 3 or more scatters delivers a retrigger with another 15 free spins being added to your total. You can trigger up to 180 free spins in total from this feature, along with a 3x multiplier.

Gold Review Summary – simpler action from Big Time Gaming

There’s nothing very complicated about the Gold slot. The flashy design is in your face and the gameplay is super simple. It was released in 2013 so it is showing it’s age.

The blingy visuals won’t be to all tastes but the straightforward gameplay is decent enough courtesy of the multipliers which can enhance your winning chances in both the base game and the Free Spins feature.

A win during a free spin with a wild will give you a 6x multiplier. Max wins of 12,500 x stake is pretty decent and higher than what’s on offer in BTG’s most popular title, Bonanza Megaways, for example.

Of course, if Gold is one of your favourite songs, this slot should appeal. Even the most ardent Spandau Ballet fans might be reaching for the mute button after an extended run of play, though. In terms of gameplay, this is Big Time Gaming’s most basic offering.

Since this was released, BTG have created Megaways, Megaquads and Megaclusters. However, they are no stranger to using songs in their games with Wild Flower featuring a soundtrack from British rockers The Cult.
