Visually, Pearl of the Caribbean is what you’d expect from a Barcrest offer – graphically, it has a land-based feel. Set at sea and with the female pirate to the right of the reel set, symbols on the reels include diamonds, clubs, spades and diamonds as well as cannons, treasure chests, pearls, pirate ships and skulls. The latter is the most rewarding symbol giving you 25 times your stake for 5 across a payline.

The female pirate symbol is the wild and substitutes for all symbols bar the scatter. When it appears fully in view, the Expanding Wild feature is triggered – it will then expand and activate the top 4 reel sets to give you 250 paylines in total. The expanded wilds on the bottom reel the duplicate to the corresponding reel on the top 4 reel sets meaning wild reels across all 5 reel sets.

Pearl of the Caribbean also comes with a Free Spins Bonus feature – this is played if you see 3 or more gold doubloon scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. 3, 4 or 5 scatters will give you 8, 12 or 15 free spins. During the feature, any wild pirate symbol appearing will expand to take over its reel and then activate the upper reel sets with wild reels on each. 3 or more scatters appearing during the feature will give you additional free spins.

Being a Barcrest slot, Pearl of the Caribbean comes with a Big Bet Game feature – this will give you 5 linked spins. You have 3 options which give you different extras:

  • £20 Big Bet Game – all wild pirates expand when partially in view
  • £30 Big Bet Game – all wild pirates expand when partially in view and low value symbols are removed
  • £50 Big Bet Game – all wild pirates expand when partially in view and low value symbols are removed. Pirate symbols including multiplier values up to 5x.

Whilst playing 5 spins for £50 may seem expensive, the potential 5x multiplier can lead to huge wins – I would only recommend this if you have deep pockets or are playing with accumulated wins.

Despite Pearl of the Caribbean not being the best slot graphically, the gameplay is excellent and has the feel of a proper old school slot. Variance wise it’s in the middle with top wins of up to 1,250 times your stake if you manage to fill all 5 reel sets with pirate wilds. Overall, I really like this game – if you like the pirate theme, Red Lady by Novomatic is also a game I would play (it’s volatile and a land-based favourite).
