Spain is the setting for Books and Bulls, a matador-themed slot from Bally Wulff. The design in Books and Bulls has a classical feel – the reels are set against a historic street and include a selection of Spanish-themed objects and people alongside the usual lower value playing cards. Symbols on show include castanets and a matador’s red cape, both of which pay up to 75 times your total stake. Next comes the female flamenco dancer who awards half, 4, 40 or 100 times your total if you land 2, 3, 4 or 5 on a payline.

The bull fighter is the game’s wild – a well as substituting for all other symbols apart from the 2 scatter symbols, it also awards payouts of up to 250 times your total stake. You’ll notice we haven’t yet mentioned either books or bulls from the slots title – both of these are scatters and trigger a bonus feature.

Land 3, 4 or 5 of the book scatter and you’ll win 2, 20 or 200 times your stake. You’ll also trigger the Free Spins feature and be awarded 10 free spins. Before these free spins begin, 1 symbol will be chosen at random to become the bonus symbol which then offers payouts scatter style. That is, they don’t have to fall on the same payline but anywhere on the reels. You can retrigger more free spins here too with up to 20 available in total.

3, 4 or 5 of the bull symbol anywhere on the reels also triggers the Free Spins feature and with it, 10 free spins. The extra here is the addition of sticky wilds – whenever the bull fighter wild lands, he will be frozen in position for the remainder of the feature.  You can also retrigger the feature with a total of 20 free spins possible.

Books and Bulls is a nicely designed slot – the visuals are impressively done. A shame then that the backing track didn’t come with more of a Spanish flavour.

The features are pretty standard but none the worse for that. The payouts are good if you land a 5-in-a-row combination which means the base game and free spins can deliver decent results. We’d put the variance on the north side of medium due to the sticky wilds.

There aren’t too many flourishes on show in Books and Bulls. It’s a perfectly solid effort though and worth considering if you fancy a slot with a bit of Spanish flair. Saying that, I recommend ELK Studios’ Wild Toro which is all about bulls and matadors.
