Head to the frozen wastelands of North America in Winning Wolf, a wildlife themed slot from Ainsworth Technologies. It’s a 5 reel, 100 payline game that benefits from free spins with, appropriately enough given the subject matter, frozen wilds. Play from between £1 and £75 per spin.

Set against a night time, snow-filled mountain backdrop, the reels include Ainsworth’s usual collection of playing cards alongside a range of wild animals. In ascending order of value are a deer, a squirrel, an owl, a buffalo and an eagle. Land 5 of the latter on a single payline for a payout of 10 times your total stake.

Appearing on reels 3, 4 and 5 only, the wolf is the game’s wild – it doesn’t offer any specific payouts but can help things along by substituting for all other symbols with the exception of the scatter. The wolf can land fully stacked and fill the whole reel in which it appears.

The mountain range symbol is the scatter- land 3, 4 or 5 of these anywhere on the reels and you’ll pocket a prize of 2, 10 or 100 times your total bet. You’ll also trigger the Free Games feature and be awarded 8 free spins.

Things are slightly altered during the feature – the paytable is a little different and the wild wolf appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 rather than 3, 4 and 5. Whenever the wolf wild lands, it will be frozen in position for the remainder of the feature. You can trigger more of those free spins, in chunks of 5, if you manage to land 3 or more mountain range scatters on a single free spin.

Winning Wolf has the look and feel of brick and mortar slot conversion – the visuals are solid rather than spectacular and the soundtrack has all the bangs and bleeps you’d expect to hear in a casino. It’s a similar story with the features which, it’s fair to say, are limited – they can pack a decent punch when they hit though if you manage to land multiple frozen wilds early in the proceedings.

We found the variance to be in the medium to high range – however, the Return to Player rate of 93.85% is a little on the skinny side.

If you want to play a classic casino style slot from the comfort of your own home, then games created by Ainsworth are a pretty good bet. That’s the case here. Don’t expect anything too flashy and the Winning Wolf shouldn’t leave you disappointed. If you like wolves, NextGen Gaming’s Wolfpack Pays is a better option.
