The design in Red Dragon has a strong Chinese feel – the lower value A to J playing card values are written in Chinese character style and are joined by sushi (which we thought was Japanese), a fan, hat, nunchucks and a traditional paper lantern. The warrior is the wild, replacing everything bar the scatter and bonus.
The pale blue reels are enclosed within a classical temple structure and overlooked by a pair of red dragons. It all looks rather nice. Add a gentle Chinese soundtrack and the design comes together very well. What then of the features?
There are 2 bonus features on offer in Red Dragon. Land 3 or more of the dragon symbol on a payline and you’ll trigger the Bonus feature. It’s a variation on the pick me round. Chinese lanterns float into the sky – pick 1. If it reveals a dragon head, you’ll win a coin prize. Land a heart and you’ll lose a life.
Keep on picking until you land 3 hearts or you fill the entire dragon below the reels and win the maximum payout. If you trigger the bonus with 4 or 5 dragons, the chances of winning a bigger prize increase.
Red Dragon also comes with a Free Spins feature – to trigger it, you’ll need to land the scatter (pagoda). 3, 4 or 5 of them on the reels on a single spin will get you 10, 20 or 30 free spins. All payouts during the free spins are subject to a 2x multiplier and are doubled.
This virtual trip to China is a good one – it’s very easy on both the eye and ear which makes it very playable. The features are pretty solid too, as is the Return To Player rate of 97.32%. If you can’t get enough of Chinese-themed slots, then Red Dragon is certainly one to consider. However, there are better games out there with Playtech’s The Great Ming Empire recommended.
